The size of the base file depends entirely on the size of the output you need for printing, engraving, etc. This is ultimately the size of the production file you'll receive when a customer submits an order.
If you need to print a PNG file of 2000 x 2000 px in 300 dpi, then your base file will need to have those dimensions.
On the other hand, if you need to print a PDF of 22"x16", then your base file will need to have those dimensions.

Keep in mind
The size of the base file is meant entirely for production purposes. So you don't have to worry if it's a heavy file, it will never compromise the performance on the preview.
