Adding multiple print areas to a product base lets you place more than one design on a single print file. This is useful when you want multiple customizable sections on a single product page—without needing to generate separate files.

When to Use Multiple Print Areas

Use multiple print areas when you want to apply different designs to specific sections of a product, but still generate a single print file for fulfillment. This is especially helpful for products with distinct zones that need separate customization setups — even though they share one print file.

Common examples include:

  • Mugs: Apply one design to the left side and a different one to the right. Both will be combined into one wraparound print file.
  • Flat-pack packaging: For example, a gift box printed on one unfolded sheet. You can assign different designs to each visible panel or flap.
  • Wraparound products: Like a tote bag made from a single strip of fabric. You can apply one design to the front and another to the back, all within one print file.

This gives you more flexibility as a merchant when setting up your designs — especially for products that are printed as a single piece but displayed in multiple parts.

How It Works

When you add multiple print areas to a page, you’re defining separate zones within the same print file where different designs can be placed. These areas act independently, so when you assign a design to each one, Customily will combine them into one export-ready file that matches your product’s layout.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind:

  • Print areas are added to files
Each page represents a separate print file. Any print areas you add to that page will be exported together into the same file.
  • Be mindful of files vs. print areas
Print areas live inside files. So, before adding a new print area, make sure you’re working on the correct file (e.g., front vs. back of a product).
While it’s rare to have both multiple pages and multiple print areas, it is supported for complex products like boxes or garments with multiple panels.
  • Control mockup visibility
In the mockup step, you’ll be able to place each print area visually on your product image. If there’s a print area that you don’t want shown in the storefront preview, simply place it outside the mockup image — it will still be included in the final file, just not shown to shoppers.
  • Assign designs per print area
When publishing a product, you’ll be able to assign a different design to each print area. These designs work independently from each other — giving you control over what goes where, even within the same print file.

How to Add Multiple Print Areas

  1. Go to the Print File step of your product base setup.
  2. If your product has multiple files, make sure you’re on the correct file (for example, “Front” or “Back”), as each print area is added to the file you’re currently viewing.
  3. If needed, adjust the print area that comes by default in your product, to size it and position it where you want to go.

  4. Click the “Add Print Area” button.

  5. A new print area will appear on the canvas. You can drag, resize, and rotate it to match the correct position on your product layout. Make sure you name your print areas accordingly, so it's easy to recognize them when using your product later.

    Pro Tip

You can quickly duplicate an existing print area by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V (or Cmd+C / Cmd+V on Mac). This is especially useful when you want to add another print area with the same size and shape — perfect for aligning elements like left and right sides of a mug.

  6. Repeat the process to add as many print areas as needed. When done, click Next to move on to the mockup setup.
  7. Position print areas on the mockup
You’ll now see the product mockup where you can place each print area.

If you don’t want a print area to appear on the mockup preview (for example, if it's on the back of a product and the image only shows the front), just place it outside of the visible image area.

Once added, you’ll be able to assign different designs to each print area when publishing the product.
